Free! Saturday, February 25. The Pacific Grove Public Library proudly celebrates Steinbeck’s 110th birthday.

1pm. Long-time local actor, Keith Decker, will read from works written by Steinbeck while the author resided in Pacific Grove.

2pm. “Steinbeck’s Epicenter: Pacific Grove,” a lecture by Dr. Susan Shillinglaw, Steinbeck scholar and Professor of English, San José State University.

It’s a party, there’s cake, and it’s free!

The Friends of the Pacific Grove Public library invite you to become a friend on January 21, 2012 at the PG Natural History Museum. Beginning at 1:30 p.m. the Friends will have a book swap. Bring 5 of your nicest books or puzzles and exchange for 5 other books or puzzles that you like. At 2:00 p.m. the Friends will have a business meeting and describe the benefits of being a Friend. At 2:30 p.m. photojournalist Michael Katakis and his wife Kris Hardin will speak about their latest book, Photographs and Words. The book will be for sale and can be autographed at the event.

Bring your iPad/Kindle/Nook, etc. into the library on Tuesday nights to learn how to use the library while on the go. You can download eBooks, audiobooks, and music for free using your library card! With many devices you can also renew materials, place holds, and access our databases as well. Come on in on Tuesday nights anytime between 5pm and 7pm and let us show you how.

Food For Fines

During the month of December, you can get rid of your late fines and help out those who are less fortunate at the same time! Monterey and Pacific Grove Libraries will accept nonperishable unopened food items in lieu of payment for overdue fines throughout December. All food donations will be given to the Food Bank for Monterey County.

Belle Yang has written and illustrated books that describe the China of her father’s youth.

“I’m fascinated with the old world that’s lost,” says Yang, whose father fled China in 1947 during the communist takeover. “I write to take revenge for my father, for the opportunities he lost to time and war. But the greater passion is to tell the story of old China, about the lives of other people – who died without a voice.”

Actor, poet, and storyteller Taelen Thomas will appear as Jack London on November 17 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. here at the Pacific Grove Library. Taelen will be accompanied by a talented Samoyed therapy dog playing the role of Buck. This free event is funded by the Big Read and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
